I study places to understand how they are invented by and productive of rhetoric. This research has thus far focused primarily on Youngstown, Ohio. I develop the theory of rhetorical dynamism to understand how places' rhetorics are continually evolving, and look for places where underserved communities engage in rhetorical practices to rewrite the places they inhabit.
Digital spaces are key to understanding contemporary rhetoric. I primarily study Reddit as a site for asking questions about identity and anonymity, vernacular public rhetorics, and rhetorical knowledge-making.
My teaching is focused primarily in Professional and Technical Writing. I believe in open, discussion-based classrooms where students can bridge concepts and practice. My classes emphasize multimodality, citizenship, and situation-based experiential learning.
